Contraindications to Breathwork

Your safety and wellbeing are our top priority.

While many people find BBTRS® (Biodynamic Breathwork & Trauma Release System) to be a powerful and supportive modality, it can also be intense at times. Because of this, certain health conditions may not be compatible with the physical and emotional demands of the practice. If you fall into any of the categories below, we recommend that you refrain from participating in BBTRS® at this time, or consult with a qualified healthcare provider and/or certified BBTRS® facilitator before doing so:

  • Individuals currently under the influence of recreational drugs or alcohol.

  • Those who are pregnant—particularly during the first trimester—as the intensity of deep breathwork is not recommended during this stage.

  • Individuals with asthma, unless it is very mild and well-managed. (Some people with mild asthma have found breathwork beneficial, but please consult your physician first.)

  • Anyone with a history of severe heart conditions, epilepsy, or seizures.

  • Individuals managing mental health conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, or any condition involving psychosis.

  • Those with severe diabetes. (Mild, well-managed diabetes may be compatible, but we strongly encourage discussing this with your physician.)

  • People with recent or acute physical injuries, as certain autonomic movements during BBTRS® could interfere with the healing process. (Please consult a physician or physical therapist to assess your readiness.)
